About the course

Our winter mountaineering courses will give you all the skills needed to operate in the often challenging winter environment. Mountaineering ground can be described as steeper and generally more technical than a simple walk. A rope may be employed to safeguard your ascent or descent.

This course is ideal for you if you have already had winter walking experience or have previously attended our Winter Walking Skills Course.

Courses can be two or five days long. Content will include topics such as:

  • Ice axe and crampon use
  • Equipment requirements
  • Avalanche avoidance
  • Safe route choice, finding and navigation
  • Basic rope work for ascending and descending steep ground
  • Skills for ascending graded routes, ridges and gullies.

A two day course will cover all the essential skills.

A five day course will enable you to extend the above new skills onto routes and journeys onto graded ground. You will put all the taught skills into practice whilst being guided, self led and coached under the watchful eye of your instructor.
