Helping young people grow and giving them the chance to achieve more than they thought possible, whatever their background.

Founded by Andy Spink and Stephen Thomas, Hebridean Pursuits initially offered walking, sailing, and painting holidays. They soon began working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, witnessing the positive impact of outdoor experiences on their confidence and aspirations.
The charitable trust enabled Andy and Stephen to secure grants, making activities more accessible for vulnerable youth. They offered outdoor residentials and sail training, reinvesting profits to support the Trust's mission.
RCT and Hebridean Pursuits operated mainly from Tavool House on Mull until 2017, then moved to Glencoe and Arle Lodge. Over 28 years, they raised £1.7 million and supported over 6,000 disadvantaged youths.
In 2020, we became a charitable social enterprise, merging the efforts of Roses Charitable Trust and Hebridean Pursuits Ltd. We sustain our mission through diverse funding and private client work, maintaining our high standards.
For over 35 years, we’ve been breaking down boundaries and launching young people into life-changing outdoor adventures! We pair exciting outdoor experiences with absolute safety, giving our adventurers the freedom to explore, push limits, and discover new heights.

Finance and Admin Lead
I have over 25 years finance and admin experience both as an employee and running my own business. I live in Oban with my husband and daughter and feel lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Argyll is a wonderful place to live and I enjoy walking in the stunning countryside with my family. I appreciate how lucky I am to have the stunning hills, beaches and nature on my doorstep so it is wonderful to work with an organisation who offer young people from all over the country the opportunities to experience, share and enjoy this.

Funding Development
We work closely with the Development Support Crew, a team of third sector specialists, two of whom are based locally, who help us develop and deliver our fundraising strategy, strengthen our grants pipeline, and scale our impact. Their flexible support ensures we grow sustainably - so we can better serve young people experiencing disadvantage and maximise our community reach.

Hebridean Pursuits Outdoor Learning (HPOL) is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) and operates as a charitable social enterprise. The organisation is overseen by an experienced and skilled Board of Trustees who meet four times a year providing strong governance and oversight in line with HPOL’s constitution.
I have the privilege and pleasure of living in Argyll – and I love the energy and sense of optimism that comes with a day on the hills or a dip in the sea! Something to be shared and a perfect counter-balance to my lifetime career in finance.
I am recently retired after 35 years working in Finance & Accountancy – predominantly in Local Government. I have a strong sense of public service and am keen to use my experience to help in the charity sector so I work as Treasurer for 2 organisations as well as working in a charity shop. As a teenager, I was lucky enough to be given the chance to go on an outdoor residential course and still have fond memories of the camaraderie forged by the shared experiences (though capsizing my kayak in a freezing cold Scottish loch was perhaps not my finest moment). I’m delighted to be able to support HPOL in their ambition to provide the same experiences to others (though minus the capsized kayak).
I have a background in social enterprise and working within the third sector and I am passionate about creating inclusive opportunities for marganalised individuals. I am a big believer in life long learning and think it is fantastic when people try new things and push their boundaries. On a personal note, I am a sporty person who loves racket sports and hillwalking.
Murdo is now retired having enjoyed a varied career in public, private and military sectors. These roles orientated around economic development with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, working as Factor on a West Coast Estate and contract management with the MOD, through employment with QinetiQ plc. In addition he was an Army Reservist for over 25 years and served overseas. More recently he was Chair of Scottish Pentathlon and enjoys gardening, reading, racquet sports and cycling.
As a Scout leader, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of getting young people outdoors—fostering adventure, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for nature. These experiences have strengthened my belief in the transformative power of outdoor education.
I have a personal passion for the outdoors, whether it's long-distance trails, hillwalking, or paddleboarding, and as a mountain leader trainee, I’m gaining deeper insights into the challenges and rewards of outdoor adventure. With over 12 years of experience in the charity sector, my work has focused on developing and managing impactful global partnerships and programmes across youth, humanitarian, and health.
Joining the board of Hebridean Pursuits Outdoor Learning allows me to contribute my expertise and passion to an organisation renowned for its commitment to delivering high-quality and exciting outdoor experiences. I am eager to support its mission to inspire and empower young people through adventure and learning in Scotland.
